I was at Mattress Monday last night, on a very rare occasion where I was not involved in running the dump into the ground (ie. djing). A couple of killer bands played, our friends from Los Angeles (pronounced with the hard “G” the way my grandmother used to pronounce it) were Clean Prophets, who are super cool, and out friend Cute Geoff’s new band The Lark, who just recorded their debut disc at the Oddy last month. Both bands slayed, the place was packed, etc.
There was no dj last night, so Mattress was just throwing on discs that would stick. This would be a problem for just about anyone else, but Mattress is no fool, just super cool all the way.
So yeah, I’m sitting there at the end of the bar with Barnsy and Fatty and Grumpy, and Barnsy is in rare form, the most “Jay” from “Jay and Silent Bob” he has ever been. God damn, that guy is funny.
So what was I getting to? Oh, so Matress has on The Velvets’ “Loaded”, which Fatty proclaimed to be theri best record. Now, I can’t claim to be a professional musician like Fathead — or ever a professional anything these days, but I found it strange to hear. I don;t think that I have ever heard anyone proclaim that “Loaded” was their favorite Velvets record. It’s certainly the Velvets record I have listened to the least, so don’t take ever not for gospel, but I have always been A “White Light/White Heat” kind of fellow myself. But Fatty laid out a pretty good case for “Loaded”.
But you know, you never know. Every disc every artist puts out is always someone’s favorite. It’s all timing and perspective, which I guess are the same thing. I remember when Monkeyhouse came out and a lot of “longtime” Dandys fans (circa Thirteen Tales pronounced it to be kindling (because it was made out of wood, I guess). You know what? Monkeyhouse spawned a whole new type of Dandys fan, who don’t dig the sounds of Thirteen Tales and the albums that came before. Because you know why? One piece of art is not better than another, art is not a competition. You may not prefer one or the other, but everything is valid.
I mean, I guess.
So yeah, what’s your favorite record that you feel other people really don’t get or appreciate? You’re saying “Man, this fucking rocks it” while your friend Steve is all “I don’t get it, man.” RSVP.

PS. Congrats to Nate June’s brother and Oregon State on their World Series win. Nice one.
